Corvallis is a wonderful
community with many outstanding qualities. Those of us who live
here are proud of being able to live and work in such a place.
But all communities have
needs, some of which may not necessarily be visible to all. There
are many people living in Corvallis who are considerably less fortunate
than others.
The
Kiwanis Community Services Committee tries to help fulfill these needs
by conducting a series of activities aimed at making our community an
even better place.
The
American Red Cross holds monthly blood drives on the third Tuesday of each
month, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at the Corvallis Episcopal Church. Our Kiwanis club helps each month with the physical set up and take down
as well as sponsoring two drives a year.In
addition, many Kiwanians donate their blood.
Home
Life, Inc. is a Corvallis social service agency that provides safe and
structured housing and life skills training for developmentally disabled adults.Kiwanis helps with various projects, including painting, minor repairs
and outside cleanup.
Many elderly and
physically disabled people experience difficulty gaining access to standard
bathrooms. The Kiwanis Community Services Committee sponsors the acclaimed
Grab Bar Installation Program in which Kiwanis volunteers install safety grab
bars around toilets and bath tubs when requested by citizens in need.
Many times as
senior citizens age, they become less able to provide for their own basic
needs. One of these basic needs is receiving nutritious meals. This
decline is a natural result of the aging process and it happens to almost
everyone sooner or later. Sometimes, though, it can force seniors into a
choice they may not wish to make - stay at home and not eat properly or move into
a nursing home. Meals on Wheels provides up to two nutritious meals a day
for seniors and Kiwanis volunteers assist by delivering them to the seniors'
homes.
The
next time your driving into or out of the downtown Corvallis area, take note of
the South Corvallis Triangle – a small patch of ground where south third and
fourth streets meet.Kiwanis volunteers maintain an attractive array of plants, eliminate
weeds and spread bark dust there in an effort to make our community as
attractive as it can be.
Vina
Moses is a Corvallis non-profit agency that serves as a link between community
giving and those with limited resources to meet basic needs by providing
clothing, household items, and school supplies as well as emergency assistance
for medical, shelter, heat and transportation.Kiwanis Club of Corvallis donates clothing and household items, money and
time to this program.In addition,
we donated a trailer hauling unusable donated items to the Allied Waste Disposal
site.
The
Children’s Farm Home, located on Highway 20 between Corvallis and Albany,
provides an array of psychiatric mental health services to children and
families. Members of Kiwanis Club of Corvallis help out with various projects on
the home campus.
