Kids are our future.
Volunteers
from the
Kiwanis Youth Services Committee conduct youth-oriented projects and
provide grants-in-aid which assist organizations to better serve youth
living in Benton
County.
|
We support the
following:
Youth
Development Organizations
Benton County's 4-H
Wildlife Stewards, School Enrichment and Outreach Programs are for youth where
English is a second language. The efforts of these programs benefit more
than 1200 youth each year.
We annually provide
funds to support educational and developmental activities programs.
We fund the crafts
and group needs programs.
We are the
sponsoring organization for Cub Scout Pack 456 at Franklin Elementary
School.
Youth With
Special Needs
CASA provides
trained volunteers to act as advocates for children who have been removed from
parental custody by the State of Oregon. Advocates monitor events related
to the children's situations, act as liaison to the courts, provide historical
continuity over the life of the proceedings and evaluate whether or not
children's needs are being met.
We provide funds
for the Benton County Health Department's ACIST Program, enabling rural youth
from limited income families to attend the Benton County Fair.
In partnership with
the Corvallis Kiwanis Foundation, each year we provide Christmas gifts to more
than 40 youth, five cottages and the transition home at the Children's Farm Home
and 20 residents and four residential homes at Home Life Incorporated. All
together, these gifts benefit more than 300 youth each year. Because of
the caring and support of Kiwanis, Christmas is very special to these young
people, many of whom have no significant others in their lives. These
gifts are made possible by individual contributions to the Foundation or the
Children's Farm Home.
Mount Hood Kiwanis
Camp
The Mount Hood Kiwanis Camp
provides accessible
outdoor experiences to people with disabilities to enhance personal growth and
quality of life. Each year, we sponsor up to nine youth to attend this
program.
Myrtlewood Youth
Services
Myrtlewood Youth
Services works with socially-challenged youth in Benton County and surrounding
areas in a secure home setting.
We provide funding
support to Old Mill School programs and their annual "Cloudburst
Classic" golf tournament fundraising event. These gifts support more
than 75 youths each year.
Youth Leadership
and Service
In partnership with
the Kiwanis Sunrisers and Kiwanis Western
Hills clubs, we support OSU Circle K, a program for university
students to help them expand their opportunities for personal growth,
development and fellowship through community service. We provide advisory
and financial assistance and collaborate on service projects.
We sponsor high
school juniors to attend the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Program. Hugh
O'Brian was the star of the mid-1950's TV show, "The Life and Legend of
Wyatt Earp" and has since dedicated his life to youth causes.
Educational
Programs
We provide funding
to purchase new musical equipment for the band and help the members of the
engineering club as they prepare for careers in the engineering field.
The Fresh Start
Program at Corvallis High School concentrates on helping under-achieving
students improve their performance. Each month, we recognize students who
have shown remarkable improvement in their studies.
First Book of
Benton & Linn Counties
This program
supports literacy education of young children. We provide funding to buy
books for children of limited income families in the two counties.
Student of the
Quarter and Most Improved Student Awards
At each high
school, we give awards to students in two categories: Student of the Quarter for
students displaying impressive scholastic and activity performances and Most
Improved Student for students displaying impressive scholastic improvement from
a low level of performance. These awards are presented at Kiwanis Club of
Corvallis regular weekly meeting.
Other Youth
Programs
We provide support
for the summer Youth Garden Project.
We support the
Parent Enhancement Program which matches experienced mothers with teen mothers
as mentors to provide support, education and guidance to help prevent child
neglect and abuse.
On the first Sunday
of May of each year in Central Park, we conduct the Bird House Project in which
we help children of all ages build birdhouses. This program is in
partnership with Mary's River Lumber Company and Corvallis Custom Kitchens and
Baths.
